Overview
Active ingredientVonoprazan 20 mg (as fumarate)
Vocinti contains vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB). It lowers stomach acid in a different way from PPIs: it works from the first dose, does not need to be taken before food, and its effect is not changed by the CYP2C19 gene that affects how some people process PPIs.
Each box has 30 film-coated tablets of 20 mg (3 blister strips of 10).
Doctors use it to heal and prevent erosive reflux oesophagitis, for stomach and duodenal ulcers, and together with antibiotics to clear H. pylori.
Prescription medicine. A CAREPLUS doctor reviews your order before it is dispensed.
How to take
Usually 20 mg once a day, with or without food, for the course your doctor sets (often 4 to 8 weeks to heal oesophagitis).
For H. pylori, it is usually taken twice a day with antibiotics for 7 to 14 days, exactly as prescribed. Finish the whole course.
Swallow the tablet with water.
Side effects
Usually well tolerated. Possible side effects: constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, bloating, headache and rash. Get medical help for severe diarrhoea, a serious skin reaction or signs of an allergic reaction.
Precautions
- Must not be taken with the HIV medicines atazanavir or rilpivirine. Tell the doctor about all your medicines.
- Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver or kidney disease.
- See a doctor first for red-flag symptoms: difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, weight loss, or new symptoms after age 45.
Vocinti (Vonoprazan) 20mg Tablet, 30s: common questions
How is Vocinti different from a PPI?
Vonoprazan blocks acid production directly and works from the first dose, with or without food. PPIs need a few days to reach full effect and work best before meals.
Does Vocinti treat H. pylori by itself?
No. It is used together with antibiotics prescribed by the doctor; the strong acid control helps the antibiotics work.
