Overview
Active ingredientEsomeprazole 40 mg (as magnesium trihydrate)
Nexium contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that lowers the amount of acid the stomach makes. Doctors use it for acid reflux and inflammation of the food pipe (reflux oesophagitis), stomach and duodenal ulcers, protecting the stomach in people who need anti-inflammatory painkillers, and together with antibiotics to clear H. pylori.
Each box has 14 tablets of 40 mg.
Prescription medicine. A CAREPLUS doctor reviews your order before it is dispensed.
How to take
Usually 1 tablet once a day, or as your doctor advises. Take it in the morning at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew it. If you have trouble swallowing, ask our doctor how to disperse it in water.
For H. pylori, the dose and course are set by the doctor together with the antibiotics.
Side effects
Usually well tolerated. Common side effects: headache, stomach ache, diarrhoea, constipation, wind and nausea.
With long-term use (usually more than a year): low magnesium or vitamin B12, and a small increase in the risk of bone fractures and gut infections. Stop and get medical help for severe diarrhoea, a serious skin rash, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Precautions
- Tell the doctor about all your medicines, especially clopidogrel, methotrexate, warfarin and HIV medicines such as atazanavir or rilpivirine.
- See a doctor first if you have difficulty swallowing, vomit blood, pass black stools, lose weight without trying, or are over 45 with new symptoms.
- Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have liver disease.
- Use the lowest dose for the shortest time your doctor advises.
