Papilocare is a vaginal gel sold for women with HPV-related cervical changes, or to support the cervical and vaginal lining. It is different from a medicine that kills the virus. This guide explains what it is, what the research shows, and when to ask a doctor first.

In short: Papilocare is based on Coriolus versicolor. Some studies report promising results, but they are small and not conclusive. It is a complement to screening and medical follow-up, not a replacement for either.

What is in it

Coriolus versicolor is a bracket fungus (also called turkey tail) used in traditional Asian medicine. The extract is formulated as a gel and supplied as single-dose cannulas (applicators), 21 per box, for use in the vagina. See Papilocare at CAREPLUS.

What the research shows

Several clinical studies, including a sub-analysis of the PALOMA study in women over 40, have looked at this gel in women with HPV. Some report that more women had HPV clearance or improved cervical findings than in comparison groups. Other reviews note that the studies are small, often short, and some were run by the manufacturer’s research group. The sources below have the detail.

So far, the honest summary is: promising, but not proven. It has not been shown to clear HPV in every woman.

Who should check with a doctor first

  • women who are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • women with unexplained vaginal bleeding, especially after sex or between periods
  • women with an abnormal Pap smear that has not been followed up
  • anyone with a known allergy to fungal products

How it fits with screening

Keep up with cervical screening, a Pap smear and an HPV DNA test where available, even if you use Papilocare. Ask your doctor how often to repeat screening, and what to do if your results are abnormal. Using the gel does not remove the need for follow-up.

Does Papilocare cure HPV?

No product has been proven to clear HPV in every woman. Some studies of this gel report that HPV tests became negative in some women, but the studies are small and not yet conclusive. Use it alongside screening and medical advice, not instead of them.

Yes. A CAREPLUS doctor reviews it before it is sent, to check that it suits you.
