Melatonin in Malaysia: is it legal, where to buy it, and how to take 5 mg safely
A doctor's guide to melatonin in Malaysia: why it isn't on supermarket shelves, where you can buy it legally (online or near you in KL and Selangor), whether 5 mg is the right dose, and who should not take it.

Melatonin is one of the most popular sleep aids in the world, and in many countries you can pick it up next to the vitamins. Malaysia is different, which is why so many people search for where to buy melatonin in Malaysia. This guide explains the rules, where you can buy it legally, whether 5 mg is the right strength, and how to take it safely.
In short: melatonin is legal in Malaysia, but it is a controlled medicine (a Group C poison), so it is supplied by a doctor or a licensed pharmacist rather than sold off an open shelf. You can buy it from a clinic or pharmacy that checks it suits you, including online. Our CarePlus Sleep Support (melatonin 5 mg) is reviewed by a CAREPLUS doctor before it is sent, delivered across Malaysia, or collected at our clinics in Kepong and Sungai Buloh.
Is melatonin legal in Malaysia?
Yes. Under the Poisons Act 1952, the Ministry of Health's Poisons List includes melatonin, all preparations, in Group C. In practice, this means:
- a doctor can supply it to their patient, and a licensed pharmacist can sell it after checking it is suitable and keeping a record;
- it should not be sold by general shops, supermarkets or unlicensed online sellers;
- it is not a prescription-only medicine, but a doctor or pharmacist must be involved in supplying it.
That is why you usually will not find melatonin on the open shelf at a pharmacy chain in Malaysia, even though it is common in the US, where it is sold as a dietary supplement.
Where to buy melatonin in Malaysia
You have three legal options:
- A community pharmacy: ask the pharmacist at the counter. Stock varies from shop to shop, and the pharmacist will ask a few questions before selling it.
- Your doctor or clinic: the doctor can check why you are not sleeping well and supply melatonin if it suits you.
- An online clinic or pharmacy: the safest online option is one where a doctor or pharmacist reviews your health questions before dispatch. At CAREPLUS, you answer a few questions at checkout, our doctor reviews them, and the capsules are sent in plain packaging.
Buying melatonin near you in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor
If you prefer to collect in person, choose Collect at Clinic at checkout and pick up your order at Chye Clinic (48 Jalan Lang Kuning, Kepong), CarePlus Clinic Bubut (25 Jalan Bubut, Kepong) or CarePlus Clinic Sungai Buloh. Elsewhere in Malaysia, we deliver to your door.
What about Shopee, Lazada or buying from overseas?
Be careful. Melatonin sold by marketplace sellers in Malaysia is often an unregistered import, and you cannot be sure what is in it. When US researchers tested 25 melatonin gummy products in 2023, 22 did not contain the amount on the label: one had no melatonin at all, and others contained up to 3.5 times the stated dose. A product supplied through a clinic or pharmacy comes from a known, regulated source.
How much does melatonin cost in Malaysia?
Price depends on the dose per tablet, the number of tablets, whether it is a registered medicine (such as prolonged-release 2 mg tablets) or a compounded formula, and what else is in it. Our capsule combines melatonin 5 mg with magnesium glycinate, L-tryptophan, zinc and vitamin B6, and buying 2 bottles costs less per bottle. You can see today's price on the product page.
Is melatonin 5 mg the right dose?
Studies of melatonin for sleep have used doses from about 0.5 mg to 5 mg, and 5 mg is a common adult strength. A higher dose is not always better: some people feel groggy the next morning, especially older adults, because melatonin stays in their body longer. If that happens, tell our doctor. Do not double the dose if one capsule does not work; speak to a doctor instead.
How to take melatonin
- Take 1 capsule 30 to 60 minutes before your planned bedtime, at the same time each night.
- Dim the lights and put screens away after taking it: bright light works against melatonin.
- For jet lag, take it at bedtime in your new time zone for a few nights after arrival.
- Use it for the short term. If you still need it after 3 to 4 weeks, see a doctor to look for the cause.

Who should not take melatonin without a doctor's advice
- pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone under 18;
- people with epilepsy, an autoimmune condition, depression, or liver disease;
- people taking blood thinners (such as warfarin), other sleeping pills or sedatives, diabetes or blood pressure medicines, or antidepressants (our capsule also contains tryptophan, which adds to their effect on serotonin);
- anyone who has to drive or operate machinery soon after taking it.
When poor sleep needs a doctor, not a supplement
See a doctor if poor sleep has lasted more than a month, if you snore loudly or wake up gasping (possible sleep apnoea), if you feel very sleepy during the day, or if low mood, worry or pain is keeping you awake. Treating the cause works better than any sleep aid.

9. Questions people ask
Is melatonin legal in Malaysia?
Yes. Melatonin is listed in Group C of the Poisons List under the Poisons Act 1952, so it can be supplied by a doctor or sold by a licensed pharmacist, but not by general shops or unlicensed sellers.
Can I buy melatonin without a prescription in Malaysia?
A licensed pharmacist or a clinic can supply it after checking it suits you. At CarePlus Clinic, you answer a few health questions at checkout and our doctor reviews them before your order is sent, so you don't need a separate prescription.
Where can I buy melatonin near me in Kuala Lumpur?
Ask at a community pharmacy, or order online from CarePlus Clinic and choose Collect at Clinic to pick it up at Chye Clinic or CarePlus Clinic Bubut in Kepong, or CarePlus Clinic Sungai Buloh. We also deliver across Malaysia.
Is 5 mg of melatonin too much?
5 mg is a common adult dose and within the range used in studies (about 0.5 to 5 mg). If you feel groggy the next morning, tell our doctor rather than taking more or less on your own.
Why can't I find melatonin at Watsons or Guardian?
Because melatonin is a controlled medicine in Malaysia, it is not sold on the open shelf. Some pharmacies keep it behind the counter, so ask the pharmacist.
Is it safe to buy melatonin on Shopee or from overseas?
It is risky. Imported melatonin from marketplace sellers is often unregistered, and tests of melatonin supplements have found doses very different from the label. Buy from a clinic or licensed pharmacy.
