Overview

Active ingredientTirzepatide 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg per dose

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection in a pre-filled KwikPen. It acts on two gut hormones, GIP and GLP-1, which help the body control blood sugar, reduce appetite and make you feel full sooner.

Used for

  • Adults with type 2 diabetes, to improve blood sugar control, alongside diet and exercise
  • Weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnoea, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity

Available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg. Each pen holds 4 weekly doses. Made by Eli Lilly.

Prescription medicine. Our doctor reviews your details and medical questionnaire before it is supplied, and may call you to check that it suits you.

How to take

  • Inject once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.
  • Inject under the skin of the tummy, thigh or upper arm, and change the spot each week.
  • Starting dose: 2.5 mg once a week for 4 weeks, then 5 mg. Our doctor may increase the dose in 2.5 mg steps, at least 4 weeks apart, up to 15 mg a week.
  • Missed dose: if 4 days or less have passed, inject as soon as you can. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and inject on your usual day.
  • Read the pen instructions in the pack before first use, and use a new pen needle for each injection.

Storage: keep unused pens in the fridge (2 to 8°C). Do not freeze. Follow the pack leaflet for how long a pen can be kept out of the fridge once in use.

Side effects

Most side effects affect the stomach and gut, and are most common when starting or increasing the dose:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation
  • Less appetite, indigestion, burping or bloating
  • Tiredness
  • Redness or itching where you inject
  • Low blood sugar, mainly if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea such as gliclazide

Stop and see a doctor straight away if you get severe stomach pain that does not go away (with or without vomiting), which can be a sign of pancreatitis, pain in the upper right tummy or yellow skin or eyes (gallbladder problems), signs of an allergic reaction, or vomiting or diarrhoea that leaves you dehydrated.

Precautions

  • Do not use if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer, or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2). Tell our doctor about a lump or swelling in your neck, trouble swallowing or a hoarse voice.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you take the contraceptive pill, it may work less well for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Use a condom as well during those weeks, or switch to a non-oral method.
  • Tell our doctor if you have had pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, severe stomach or gut problems, kidney problems or diabetic eye disease.
  • Do not use together with other GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide or liraglutide.
  • Drink enough fluids if you have vomiting or diarrhoea, to avoid dehydration.
