Tenof-EM vs Truvada: is generic PrEP the same?

Tenof-EM and Truvada contain the same two medicines in the same doses. What generic PrEP is, who makes Tenof-EM, and why it costs less.

Tenof-EM is a generic version of Truvada, the original PrEP brand. Both contain the same two HIV medicines in the same doses, and are taken the same way.

In short: each Tenof-EM tablet contains emtricitabine 200 mg and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg, exactly like Truvada. Generic medicines must contain the same active ingredients at the same strength as the original, so they work the same way. The difference is mainly the price.

Who makes Tenof-EM?

Tenof-EM is made by Hetero, a large Indian manufacturer of HIV medicines. Hetero’s emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 200/300 mg tablets have been on the World Health Organization’s list of prequalified medicines since 2013. Generic emtricitabine and tenofovir like this are what most PrEP programmes around the world use.

Does generic PrEP work as well?

Yes. The protection comes from the active ingredients, which are the same. What matters most is taking it consistently: daily PrEP lowers the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed.

Why is it cheaper?

Generic manufacturers don’t carry the original research and development costs, so they can sell the same medicine for much less. That makes PrEP affordable enough to take long term. At CAREPLUS Clinic, a month of Tenof-EM PrEP (30 tablets) costs RM130.

Can I switch from Truvada to Tenof-EM?

Yes. Because the medicines and doses are the same, you can switch without a break. Keep your regular check-ups (HIV test every 3 months and kidney tests), as explained in our guide to PrEP blood tests.
